Herbert A. Fish

Herbert A. Fish, age 91, of Battle Creek died Monday, November 25, 2013. He was born in Battle Creek on July 30, 1922, the loving son of Floyd H. and Winnie (West) Fish. Herbert faithfully served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Army, and was honorably discharged with numerous commendations in January 1946. Over the years, he had been employed as a truck driver with Consolidated Freight, A.H. Perfect, Michigan Express, Interstate Freight, and had previously served as a carpenter with the Goldsworthy Construction Company.

Herbert married Margaret L. "Peggy" Elkins in Battle Creek on October 15, 1949; she sadly preceded him in death on October 16, 2007. He is survived by his children, Rockie J. (Maureen) Fish of Kentucky and Deborah J. (Bruce) Berry of Battle Creek; three grandchildren, James Ryan (Lucia) Fish, Mike Berry and Greg (Tiffany Housey) Berry; a great-granddaughter, Isabella Fish; a sister, Irene Norton and his dog "Libby". Herbert was also preceded in death by a step-daughter, Betty Smith; a brother, Francis W. Fish, and two sisters, Helen Love and Winifred Thompson.

Herbert was a member of the American Legion Post #298 and the V.F.W. Post #565. A true outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time at his second home up north and working with his hands. Herbert always had a great love for animals and people.

A memorial service celebrating Herbert's life will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 2, 2013 at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, with Pastor Steve Olmstead of the Pleasantview Family Church, officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to the Humane Society of South Central Michigan.
