Herschel Henry Klueter

Herschel Henry Klueter, 83, of Battle Creek and formerly of Beltsville, Maryland died peacefully at Bronson at Home Hospice Residence after a four year battle with dementia on Sunday, July 31, 2016.

He was born August 14, 1932 in Edwardsville, Illinois the ninth of ten children to John Henry and Rosa Bernadina (Rohrkaste) Klueter. Herschel grew up on a farm near Edwardsville, IL and was a 1949 graduate of Edwardsville High School. He honorably served his county in the U.S. Army 1953-1955. Herschel received his post graduate degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Illinois. He received his PhD in Agricultural Engineering from Purdue University and his Professional Engineering Certification. Herschel was employed by the United States Department of Agriculture for over 30 years, retiring in 1989. During that time he was the American Society of Agricultural Engineers North Atlantic Region Chairman and was granted a patent in 1965 for an agricultural Pneumatic granular or seed applicator.

Herschel married Mavis Bourgois on December 31 in 1955 and they had four children together. After their separation, he married his second wife, Barbara (Snow) Jiacinto Klueter on October 13, 1979 in the Chapel at the University of Maryland. Barbara preceded Herschel in death on December 27, 1998. Mavis preceded him in January 1998. Surviving are three children, Daniel R (Jennifer Marucci) Klueter of Battle Creek, MI, Nancy L. Klueter of Burbank, CA, Stephen P. (Anni Christiansen) Klueter of Great Mills, MD; grandchildren, Nathaniel (Mandi Hunsberger) Klueter, Emily Klueter and Sophia Klueter; and many cousins, nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to his wife, Barbara, Herschel was also preceded in death by a grandson, Timothy Klueter; a daughter, Lisa J.(Daniel) Reilly; his parents; and nine siblings, Wilma (Ben) Muirheid, Melba (Dave) Hunker, Fremont (Florence) Klueter, Virgil (Eileen) Klueter, Wilbur (Thelma) Klueter, Leroy (Helen) Klueter, Vera Mae (Donald) Henschen, Shirley (Edward) Schillinger and Norma (Udell) Meyer.

Herschel was a member of the Christian Science Church, Silver Spring, MD. He enjoyed gardening and traveling. Herschel loved euchre, pinocle and puzzles. He will be remembered as a gardener, always keeping fresh fruits and vegetables growing in the back yard.

Military honors and inurnment will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 22, 2016 at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery, 1122 Sunrise Beach Rd, Crownsville, MD 21032.
