Hugh Edwin White

September 22, 1923 — January 20, 2015

Hugh Edwin White, age 91, of Battle Creek died peacefully at his home with his loving family at his side on Tuesday evening, January 20, 2015. He was born in Battle Creek on September 22, 1923, the loving son of Leo and Bernice (Halladay) White. Hugh graduated from Lakeview High School with the Class of 1941. He faithfully served his country as a member of the United States Army and then furthered his education at Ferris State and Michigan State Universities.

Hugh married the "Love of His Life", Kathryn B. "Kaye" Katz in Battle Creek on February 11, 1944; she sadly preceded him in death on October 28, 2010 after more than 66 wonderful years of marriage. He is survived by his daughter, Gayle Ann (Stephen) Carpenter of Jackson, MI; two sons, Darryl Hugh (Toni) White and Terry Glen White, both of Battle Creek; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Hugh was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Arthur "Hal" White.

Hugh farmed all of his life and was known for his pumpkins! He sold them for more than 20 years. Hugh bowled twice a week, or as he said, "exercises twice a week". He also enjoyed watching his Detroit Tigers, growing strawberries & blueberries, and up until recently walked a mile a day with his best friends and pets, Sonny his dog, and White Paws his cat by his side. Hugh was a past-president of the Calhoun County farm Bureau, Battle Creek Farm Bureau Co-Op, Marshall Farm Bureau Oil, the Michigan Livestock Exchange, was on the Emmett Township planning commission, member of the MMPA, Newton Township Association, attended Newton United Methodist Church, Home Grange 129, and sang with the barbershop group SPEBSQSA.

The family will receive friends12:00 (noon) to 1:00 p.m., Monday, January 26, 2015 at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home where funeral services to celebrate Hugh's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Richard D. Wilson of Marshall, MI, officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Battle Creek. In lieu of flowers, for those wishing to make a memorial contribution, please consider the Home Grange #129 or the Humane Society of South Central Michigan.
