In Loving Memory of Jack Lee Germinder Jr.
Jack Lee Germinder Jr., 70, unexpectedly finished the final chapter of his life on Earth on July 21, 2026, and has undoubtedly begun a glorious new story in Heaven. He leaves behind a family who adored him, a library that may never be fully cataloged, and countless people who will forever hear a terrible pun and think, "Jack would have loved that.”
Jack was born on August 5, 1955, in South Bend, Indiana, and spent his life proving that kindness, curiosity, and a well-timed joke could solve almost anything.
On July 26, 1975, he married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Joann (Gilroy) Germinder. Just days shy of celebrating 51 years together, they built a marriage rooted in unwavering devotion, laughter, and the kind of partnership that became the foundation for a family who never doubted they were deeply loved.
Together they raised three children: Tina (Davina) Germinder-Metzger, Jack Germinder III, and Tricha (Nathan) Grajek. To them, he was never just Dad, he was "Super Dad," the kind of father who always showed up, always put his family first, and somehow always knew exactly what was needed. His favorite title, however, was "Bumpa." He was the world's best Bumpa to Tristin, Chandra, Daniel, and Jonathan, happily accepting the job description of storyteller, popcorn maker, artist, trivia master, and unconditional cheerleader.
Jack also delighted in making his ten nieces and nephews—and now their children—groan and laugh in equal measure with an endless supply of puns, jokes, and stories. He never met an audience he couldn't entertain.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Lee Germinder; his mother, Linda Lee (Swem) Germinder; his brothers Mark Germinder and Vipin Singh; his sister Teresa Hrivnek; and his niece Katie Beth.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Joann; his children and grandchildren; his brothers Eric (Sally) Germinder, Stephen (Harry) Gilroy, Tim (Leigh) Gilroy, and Paul Gilroy; his sister Bernice Singh; and extended family and friends who will continue telling "Jack stories" for generations.
Jack proudly served in the United States Air Force before spending 24 years leading the print shop at Kellogg Community College. He approached his work the same way he approached life, with quiet dedication, a sense of humor, and a willingness to help anyone who needed it.
He was an avid reader and enthusiastic book collector, though "collector" may be a generous word for someone whose books seemed to reproduce on their own. His mind was an astonishing vault of facts, history, obscure music, random trivia, and stories just waiting for the perfect opportunity to be shared…which, according to Jack, was every opportunity.
He loved music of every kind, especially if no one else had heard of it. On long car rides, he could often be found singing along in falsetto, ensuring every trip was uniquely memorable; and making sleeping in the car nearly impossible. He was a lifelong artist whose creativity found expression in pencil sketches, paintings, stained glass, and anything else that gave him a chance to make something beautiful. He never stopped learning, growing, creating, or finding wonder in the world around him.
But above all else, Jack loved people.
He served others instinctively, loved without condition, welcomed others without judgment, and believed that time spent with family was never wasted. If you visited on a Saturday night, chances are good you'd leave having eaten a perfect bowl of popcorn, heard at least three jokes, learned two fascinating pieces of trivia, and felt a little more loved than when you arrived.
If Jack could leave us with one final request, it probably wouldn't be to mourn him too long. It would be to hug your family, read another book, make something with your hands, listen to music you've never heard before, tell a truly awful pun, always make enough popcorn for everyone, and—as Mr. Spock wisely said—live long and prosper.
His story doesn't end here. It lives on in every laugh he inspired, every life he served, every piece of art he created, every book he shared, and every person fortunate enough to have been loved by him.
You will be missed. Save us a seat and don't use all the good punchlines before we get there.
Visitation will be Tuesday, July 28, 2026 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, where funeral services to celebrate Jack’s life will be 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 29. Interment will follow at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to New Story Community Bookstore to help put books into the hands of young readers, a fitting tribute to Jack's lifelong love of books, learning, and sharing stories.
