James H. “Jim” Connor, born March 15, 1941, to James H. and Rose M. Connor (Sloto), passed away on August 25, 2025. Born and raised in Gilbert, Minn., Jim attended Gilbert High School, and upon graduation he went on to earn his Bachelor of Education degree from Winona State Teachers’ College (now Winona State University) in Winona Minn., and his Master’s in Education at Michigan State University. After moving to Battle Creek to teach, he married fellow educator Barbara Musselman in 1970, and together they built a life centered on education, family, and friendships.
Jim was the devoted father to three daughters: Kelly (Nick) McLaren, Cathy Connor, and Shannon (Jeremy) Roberson. He also cherished his grandchildren—Jordan, Austin, Katie, Camden, Calvin, Griffin, Charlie, and Maggie—who adored him right back.
A beloved teacher in the Battle Creek Public Schools for many years, Jim dedicated his career to nurturing the minds and hearts of countless children, making an impact on generations of students and creating lasting friendships with his colleagues. Jim loved gardening. His flower beds were backdrops for many family photos, and he grew many delicious vegetables to share with friends and neighbors.
He loved the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Twins, and Michigan State Spartans, and adopted the Detroit Tigers and Lions (when they weren’t playing the Vikings or Twins). He and Barb enjoyed exploring Michigan’s backroads and visiting lighthouses along the lakeshore. Some of his family’s best memories were made in the extra-long van he packed up for trips out west and down south, where they camped and stayed in questionable motels. He was happiest surrounded by loved ones, whether sitting on the front porch with friends, cheering from the sidelines at his daughters’ and later his grandkids’ sporting events, or striking up conversations with anyone willing to chat. Generous with his compliments and quick to share his pride, he never missed a chance to brag about his daughters and grandchildren.
Jim’s family will receive friends for visitation Wednesday, September 3rd from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Cremation Preneed Care, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Philip Roman Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 4th.
