James Carl Horton

James Carl “Jim” Horton of Indianapolis, Indiana and formerly of Battle Creek, Michigan died peacefully, with his family at his side, on Friday, July 31, 2026, at Westside Village Healthcare.

Jim was born September 9, 1949, in Battle Creek, Michigan to Kenneth Carl and Leola Frances (Uldricks) Horton. He was a 1967 graduate of Lakeview High School, went on to Central Michigan University and in 1969, joined the U.S. Army. He honorably served his country and was discharged as a Military Policeman in 1971. Jim attended Kellogg Community College for a year. Later in 1987, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Spring Arbor College, now University. He was employed at Waste Management, JC Penney and then Horton Realtors and Insurers from 1975 until it was sold in 1983. During that time, he received his Appraisal Certification from the Appraisal Institute of America. Jim was employed as an agent and appraiser for Stetler Realtors, until 1983 when he opened his own office, “Appraisal Services” serving Calhoun County and adjacent counties. Jim retired in 2019.

James Carl Horton and Deirdre Ann Keene-Kennedy were united in marriage on July 21, 1973, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Marshall, MI. Surviving are his wife, Deirdre; children, Jonathan Carl (Traci) Horton of Greenfield, IN, Heather Ann (Horton) Guilbault of Jackson, MI; five grandsons, Hayden, Rylan and Garek Guilbault, Carter and Cooper Horton; a cousin, niece and three nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Patti Wehrung and Barbara Radke.

Jim was a member of Avon United Methodist Church and the American Legion in Indianapolis. In Battle Creek, he served on the Board of Directors for the Board of Realtors and was active with MultiList. He was presented with the Realtors Emeritus Award in 2015 for 40 years of service as a Realtor. Jim loved spending time with his family and traveling. He enjoyed golfing and history. Jim will be remembered for his big smile, community spirit, generosity, robust laugh, Army stories, strong faith, and love for his family.
