James "Jim" Kornoelje

James “Jim” Kornoelje, 90, of Battle Creek, Michigan died Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Bronson Battle Creek Hospital, surrounded by his family.

Jim was born on March 20, 1936, in Battle Creek the son of Frederick and Theresa (Van Demere) Kornoelje. Jim grew up in Battle Creek, graduated from Battle Creek Central High School and attended Kellogg Community College. Jim owned and operated a company supplying sporting goods to schools and athletic teams throughout the area.

James Kornoelje was united in marriage to Caroline Ruth Bryner October 31, 1994. He was preceded in death by his wife Caroline on January 30, 2020. Surviving are his son, Michael (Trudie) Kornoelje of Battle Creek; three grandchildren, Brandon (Ashley) McGovern, Travis (Cecile Cain) Kornoelje, Nichole Kornoelje; seven great-grandchildren; two stepsons, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and their families. In addition to his wife, Jim was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Katherine Spear, Eleanor Hagen, Florence Wright; and brothers, David, Fred, Frank and Bob.

Jim received the Wall of Fame Award with his wife, Caroline, from the Battle Creek Amateur Sports Association. He played sports, coached his favorite sport, baseball and was a presence at Bailey Park and area high schools as a fan and critic. He also coached his son, Mike’s team, at Springfield High School. Jim bowled in the leagues and managed the M-66 Pro Shop for many years. In his younger years, he worked hard in his yard, trying to have the greenest lawn in the neighborhood. Jim could spin a story, make you laugh with his quick wit and entertain you with his historical and sports knowledge. He was an avid sports fan. His favorite pastimes were watching sporting events and getting the family together for fun, food and laughter.
