James Charles Spindler, Battle Creek, Michigan and Naples, Florida
James Charles Spindler was born on November 9, 1942, in Saginaw, Michigan. He spent his early years on the family farm in Freeland and later moved to Toledo, Ohio where he attended Thomas A. DeVilbiss High School. He was very active in music performance, was a member of the DeVilbiss marching, concert and pit bands, and was chosen as the outstanding musician of his high school graduating class.
After high school, Jim attended Bowling Green State University where he majored in instrumental music. He then transferred to Central Michigan University from which he graduated with a degree in music education. He also served as vice-president of his fraternity, Sigma Tau Gamma.
Jim began his teaching career in instrumental music at Grand Ledge Public Schools. While teaching, he completed a Master's in Educational Administration at Michigan State University. After serving as assistant dean at Southwestern Michigan College, he accepted the position of Director of Admissions and Registrar at Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek. He retired from KCC in 1999. Throughout his career, he was active in the Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers and served on the executive committee while treasurer. He was also proud to be a 50-year member at First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Trustee, Deacon, and a member of various committees.
You could usually find Jim on a golf course, fishing on a quiet lake or working around the house. During the winter months, he enjoyed these activities in Naples, Florida.
He is survived by Nan Spindler, his loving wife of 57 years, his son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Annette Spindler of Lansing, MI and his grandchildren, Justin and Hannah Spindler of whom he was especially proud.
Funeral services will take place at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, 105 Capital Ave NE, Battle Creek, MI 49017 on Thursday, October 13, 2022. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. with funeral services immediately following. Luncheon to follow next door at First Presbyterian Church 111 Capital Ave. NE Battle Creek, MI 49017.
