Jay Verl Simmons of Richland, MI
Jay died on Monday morning, March 24, 2014 in the comfort of his daughter's home in Galesburg, MI. He was surrounded by loved ones at the time of his passing.
Jay was born May 23, 1940 in Kalamazoo, MI at the home of his parents, Verl Claire Simmons and Ethel B. Simmons Slack (known as Bessie). He worked as a pipefitter for the James River Corporation for forty-one years. He was a talented artist who also enjoyed fishing, animals, the outdoors and spending time with his family.
He is survived by former spouses, Terrie Pritchard and Mary Simmons; siblings, Ruthie Srackangast, Karen Harkness, Carol Launius, Mary Selbee, Violet Slack, Grace Slack, Jeanine Slack and his children, Vickie Simmons, Gay Double, Shea (Nolan) Hogan, Hannon (Matt) Schutte, Sheila (Brett) Tank, and Analee (Chazz) Simmons. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and his loyal dog, Mani. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Verl Simmons.
The Memorial Service to celebrate Jay's life will be held on Wednesday, March 26th at Farley- Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Richland Chapel, 9170 East D Avenue (M-89), Richland, MI 49083 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Robert G. Muirhead of Battle Creek, MI, officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Final interment at a later date will be in Schoolcraft (MI) Cemetery. A reception will follow the Memorial Service at Shea and Nolan's residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jay's honor may be directed to the Kalamazoo Community Foundation, 151 South Rose Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49007.
