Jean Beverly (Phelps) Krohn

Jean Beverly Krohn, 90, of Battle Creek passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2022.

Jean was born on June 7, 1932 in New Haven, Michigan to Walter and Eleanor (Swailes) Phelps. She graduated with her Bachelor's degree from University of Kentucky and went on to receive her Master's from Western Michigan University. On June 14, 1956, Jean was united in marriage to Kenneth Krohn. She taught at Prairieview Elementary for four years, and then was a stay-at-home mom for twelve years to raise her two daughters while substituting. She then went back to teach full-time at Minges Brook Elementary.

Jean was an active member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church and in the Battle Creek community as a whole. She was formerly a member of the Battle Creek Symphony Guild, a board member of the Brass Band of Battle Creek, a regular volunteer at the Gilmore Keyboard Festival, Women Who Care, and helped to start up the Women's Co-op, where she was recognized with a George Award. She was a member of her high school's Hall of Fame and was a member of the Kappa Delta Phi Sorority at University of Kentucky where she received the Order of the Pearl Award for community involvement. She also started the Elementary Enrichment Community Project.

Jean is survived by her daughters, Lynn (Rick) Murphy of Flower Mound, Texas and Susan (Dan) Campbell of DeWitt, Michigan; grandchildren, Ashley (Toby) Leidel, Andrew Campbell, Joel (Kristen) Murphy, Molly (Preston) Whisenhunt; seven great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, good friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, brothers, Keith and Neil Phelps and sister, Ardith Jorgensen.

Jean's family will receive friends at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Cremation Preneed Care (105 Capital Ave. NE) on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Thursday, September 29, 2022 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A private graveside service will be held for Jean's family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Brass Band of Battle Creek, the Jean Krohn Elementary Enrichment Endowment Fund, or Centrica Care Navigators.
