Jean M. (Smith) Sackrider, 96, of Battle Creek died on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at Bronson Battle Creek, due to COVID-19.
Jean was born April 27, 1925 in Jackson, Michigan to Leland and Mildred (Latson) Smith. She grew up in Jackson and was a 1943 graduate of East Jackson High School. Jean was employed as a bookkeeper and an accountant and retired from Michigan National Bank after 27 ½ years.
Jean M. Smith was united in marriage to Frank C. Sackrider on August 19, 1944 in Angola, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank on April 21, 1997. Surviving are two sons, Bill (Sue) Sackrider of Lindale, TX, Mark (Cheryl) Sackrider of Battle Creek; six grandchildren, Susan (Chris) Bacchus, Kim Sackrider, Sarah (Dujuan) Wiley, Jennifer (Mike) Rendine, Nicole Jean Sackrider, Matthew (Christi) Sackrider; eight great-grandchildren, Josef, Alex, Isaac, Mena, Moses, Lucas, Jade, Andrew; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and their families. In addition to her husband, Jean was also preceded in death by her daughter, Suzanne Sackrider in 1963; her parents and a brother, Gerald Smith in 2004.
Jean was a member of Convis Union United Methodist Church since 1955, where she was active in United Methodist Women and Esther Evening Circle. She belonged to Church Women for many years and attended Bible Study at Battle Creek Bible Church. Jean loved writing notes to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as her friends. For many years she knitted baby outfits for Charitable Union and made countless cross stitch door hoops for Emily Andrus. She also had a prayer shawl ministry. Her favorite color was purple. Jean's family was her greatest treasure. She will be remembered as loving mother, caring grandmother, loyal friend, devoted member of her church and lover of all things purple.
Friends will be received 10:00 â 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, where a funeral service to celebrate Jean's life will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2022. An immediate family committal will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, where Jean will be laid to rest next to her husband, Frank.
