Jean Elizabeth (Shell) Vaughan

January 28, 1925 — June 1, 2015

Jean E. Vaughan, 90, a lifelong Battle Creek, Michigan resident, went to be with her Lord on Monday, June 1, 2015 after a brief illness.

Jean was born in Battle Creek on January 28, 1925 to Harry and Anna (Crawford) Shell. She grew up in Battle Creek, was raised in the Post Edition and was a 1943 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School. She was employed for 10 years at Post Cereals.

Jean E. Shell was united in marriage to Richard E. Vaughan at the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek on September 14, 1946. Sadly, she was preceded in death by her husband Richard on September 19, 1995 and two infant sisters, Marion (1922) and Anna (1923). Surviving are two sons, Steven G. (Milinda) Vaughan of Battle Creek, Craig A. (Robin) Vaughan of Caledonia, MI; one daughter, Karen A. (Terry) Burleson of Caledonia, MI; and two grandchildren, U.S. Army Captain Alexander (Megan) Vaughan, D.D.S. of Fayetteville, NC and Kimberly Burleson of Caledonia, MI; and Lynne Vaughan of Chicago, IL.

Jean was a 75 year member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was a longtime volunteer and member of the Ruth Circle and XYZ Senior Group. She and her husband were also charter members of the Westlake Presbyterian Church. Jean enjoyed volunteering for 35 years at the former Community Hospital; working in the Gift Shop, information desk and other guilds. She was a life member of Eastern Star Battle Creek Chapter 153, member of Alpha Phi Beta Sorority, bowled with the Riverside Country Club Ladies Bowing League and golfed in the Gull Lake Ladies League. Jean and Dick wintered in Kissimmee, FL beginning in 1972. She loved RV travel throughout the U.S. as well as cruising and trips to Europe. She will be remembered for her heartfelt smile, her love of people and adventurous spirit.

Friends may call 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care. Funeral services will be officiated by Rev. Patricia J. Weatherwax at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 5, 2015. Committal and interment will follow at Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
