Jerome Paul "Jerry" McCarty of Jackson, MI

Jerry, age 70, died Friday morning, April 17, 2020 at his residence with his loving family at his side. Jerry, the son of James Leo and Jean Katherine (Meyer) McCarty, was born in Detroit, MI on August 26, 1949 and was a 1967 graduate of St. John's High School, in Jackson, Michigan. He served his country honorably and nobly during the Vietnam War in the United States Army as a SP4. Jerry received a Bronze Star for gallantry while with the 525 Signal Corps, 3rd Battalion of the 1st Cavalry. He was a broadcast engineer His entire working life. As a child he developed a passion for radio, which grew to include TV as well. He started working at WIBM radio station in Jackson while still in high school. After he was discharged from the Army, He finished off his college degree from Ferris State University, with a First Class Radio and TV License. While attending school, he worked at Radio Distributing in Detroit, MI as a television repair technician. It is also where he met his wife, Denise. Once he became licensed, he went to work for WILX TV as a broadcast engineer. From there he worked at WSDS radio in Ypsilanti, MI, WPAG radio in Ann Arbor, MI and finally at The University of Michigan for 32 years until his retirement in 2012. In August of 2014, Jerry completed a studio which he built from "the ground up" for Good Shepherd Catholic Radio, 1510AM - 93.3FM. The switcher used was just like the one he used in his teens, which he donated to the studio. The transmitter and tower used to transmit the signal, is also WIBM's. He was extremely proud of this accomplishment, and always marveled how his life had come full circle. Jerry was a member of the National Association of Broadcasters.

He was a voracious reader, and had an extensive library which he enjoyed sharing with others. His favorite pastime was working on any kind of radio equipment he could get his hands on!

Jerry was united in marriage to the former Denise Ann Uzelac in Plymouth Michigan on November 17,1972 and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Sherri (Bruce) Snyder with Olivia and Madilyn all of Hickory Corners, MI and Emily (Brian) Raine with Nathan and Everly all of Brighton, MI and a son Collin (Rhiannon) with Adrienne and Trenton, all of Whitmore Lake, MI, a brother Joe, a sister Judy, and loving in laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Due to recent Government regulations, a private (by invitation only) Graveside Service to celebrate Jerry's life will be held on Friday, August 14th at 2:00 p.m. at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI with full military honors bestowed by the United States Army Honor Guard and the Fort Custer Honor Guard and Father Terry Dumas, officiating. A public Memorial Gathering will be held on Friday, August 14th at the family residence in Jackson, MI from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. to remember Jerry. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jerry's honor may be directed to Elara Caring Hospice, 900 Cooper Street, Jackson, MI 49202.
