Joan Elizabeth (Abbott) Shouldice, 87, of Battle Creek died peacefully on Sunday, December 29, 2019, at The Legacy at The Oaks.
Joan was born November 19, 1932 in Albion, Michigan the daughter of Mark A. and Arlene E. (Woodliff) Abbott. She grew up in Albion and graduated with the Class of 1951 from Washington Gardner High School in Albion. Joan attended Albion College for two years and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of Michigan in 1955. She was employed as a Dental Hygienist for Dr. Donald Whitman from 1955 to 1957 and again briefly in 1967.
Joan Elizabeth Abbott was united in marriage to Larry Edward Shouldice at the First Methodist Church in Albion on June 16, 1956. Joan was preceded in death by Larry, her husband of 63 years on November 22, 2019. Surviving are their children, Dorothy Elizabeth "Dotti" Shouldice of Battle Creek and Steven Mark Shouldice of Galesburg. Both Larry and Joan leave numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and their families. Joan was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Donald and Duane Abbott; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joyce and Don Oyler and many dear loved ones.
Joan has been a member of First Congregational Church since 1956; its Susanna Winslow Circle since 1957 and the PEO Sisterhood AB Chapter since 1984. Joan enjoyed flower gardening, growing vegetables, reading and music. She was an excellent cook and baker. The most important thing in Joan's life was her family; their activities and knowing that they were safe. She will be remembered as being selfless, patient, kind, comforting, always encouraging and she never argued even when she knew she was right. She was the kind of mother every child wished was theirs.
A service to celebrate Joan's life was officiated by Rev. Thomas J. Ott in the Miller Chapel, at the First Congregational Church, 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 6, 2020.
