John Ehlich, Jr., of Richland, MI., age 79, died March 1, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family. John was a carpenter who loved woodworking. He loved to build furniture and bird houses when he wasn't supervising the building and remodeling of Jacobson's Stores in many states. While living in Detroit, he had his own business and also worked for Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical Company. He was very involved with the youth group at Peace Lutheran Church, and formed bonds and friendships that lasted his lifetime. John loved fishing. The "big fish" stories, about the one that got away, got more outlandish with each telling.
John was very proud of serving our country while in the Air Force. Told many stories about his year in Greenland at Thule Air Base where he worked on the flight line. His polar bear stories were really embellished for the wide eyed benefit of the grandchildren.
He moved to Richland in 1975. He was a member for almost 25 years with the Lions Club. Once he retired, he loved working as a volunteer at Borgess. They had a "humor cart" so you know he fit right in with that.
He and Billie had a great time in their travels to all 50 states; loved spending time with family and friends. Dearly loved his grandchildren and told them many wild tales of places he had been and things he had done. Took them a while but they would say, "Ompy, you are just spoofing us!"
John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Billie, his daughter, Linda Mathews-Johnson (Mike), son, John Ehlich III (Julie), adopted daughter Kim Weirick,
8 grandchildren, MJ Mathews, JJ Mathews (Dana), Jerrod Ehlich, Josh Ehlich (Lauren), John Warner Ehlich (Bridget), Dana Carnes (Eric), Brandon Johnson, Brittany Rausch (Dustin), and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Dana (Dan) Ehlich.
