John B. Hogan

John B. Hogan, age 92, of Richland and formerly of Battle Creek died peacefully on Wednesday evening, August 28, 2013.

John was born May 20, 1921 in Battle Creek to Timothy Barry and Agnes Amelia (Heyser) Hogan. John was raised in Battle Creek and graduated in 1939 from St. Philip Catholic Central. He attended the University of Notre Dame, Kalamazoo College, and graduated from Argubright Business College. John served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII with the 584th Air & Material Squadron, 20th Bomber Division in India and with a B-29 unit on Tinian Island. He was employed for 34 years by Professional Management Black & Skaggs Associates, medical and dental consultants, retiring in 1981.

John married Margaret A. "Peggy" Skaggs at St. Philip Catholic Church in Battle Creek on October 16, 1948 and would have celebrated 65 years of marriage this October. They resided in Battle Creek until moving to Gull Lake in 1975. John is survived by his wife, Peggy. Also surviving are their five daughters, Patricia A. (George) Marcinkowski and Anne M. Jakubowski, both of Richland, Mary T. (Robert) Randall of Parchment, Susie M. Hogan of Augusta, and Colleen E. (John) Schmidt of Clarkston; 10grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his brother, R. Timothy (Shirley) Hogan of Ann Arbor, and sister-in-law, Patricia Hogan of Charlotte, NC . John was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Richard F. Hogan, and son-in-law, Joseph "Jake" Jakubowski.

John had been a member of St. Ann Catholic Church since 1975, where he served three terms on the Parish Council and served as a Lector and one of the first Eucharist Ministers. He was previously a member of St. Philip Catholic Church. John was an Eagle Scout (earning a Gold Palm), a former member of the Hickory Corners American Legion, a longtime member of the Knife and Fork Club, a member of the 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus, and a charter member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. John was very active with the Southern Michigan Amateur Radio Society and had been a member of Marywood and Bedford Country Clubs. His interests included communicating on his Ham radio, computers, mechanical home projects, sailing, golf, bowling and bird-watching. John spent many happy times at the Hiawatha Sportsmans Club, Engadine, MI where he was a longtime member.

John's greatest joy was spending time with his family, sharing his love of the outdoors, his hobbies, and his faith.

A visitation will be held 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, August 30, 2013 at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Battle Creek, where the Parish Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m., Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 31, 2013 at St. Ann Catholic Church, 12648 East D Avenue, Augusta, MI 49012. Interment with military honors will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery, Battle Creek. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Battle Creek Area Catholic Schools Foundation.
