Joyce Ann (Sutherland) Marshall of Battle Creek, MI
Joyce, age 79, MI, died Tuesday evening, August 23, 2016 at Bronson @ Home Hospice Residence, Battle Creek, in the presence of her family.
Joyce, the daughter of Joseph and Bernice (Gustas) Sutherland, was born in Davenport, IA on September 2, 1936. She was a 1954 graduate from Moorhead (MN) High School; a 1957 graduate of the Sisters of St. Joseph School of Nursing in North Dakota with her Registered Nurse Degree and a 1986 graduate of Western Michigan University with her Bachelor of Science in Health Studies Degree. Joyce had been a Registered Nurse at the former Leila Hospital, Chief Nurse at Clark Equipment Company of Battle Creek and Battle Creek Veterans Administration Medical Center. She enjoyed bingo, bridge, reading and traveling, but her family was the most important thing in her life.
Joyce was united in marriage to Joseph Robert Marshall in Battle Creek, MI on October 21, 1972 and he preceded her in death on May 18, 2010. Surviving are her two sons, Mark J. (Jackie) Stevens of Fort Wayne, IN and Jeff D. (Nicole) Stevens of Battle Creek; her step-son, Derek Marshall of East Lansing, MI; her five precious granddaughters, Christina (Nick) Trahin, Michelle (Brian) Leist, Hannah, Meghan and Addison Stevens ; five great grandchildren and two sisters, Lona Porkkonen of Sun City West, AZ and Bernice (Wayne) Smith of Omaha, NE. Joyce was also preceded in death by her parents and her ex-husband, Larry B. Stevens.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 26th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Philip Roman Catholic Church, 92 Capital Avenue, NE with Father Simon Chummar-Manjooran, Celebrant. Family and friends will continue Joyce's life celebration with a time of fellowship and a luncheon immediately following the Mass in St. Philip Parish Hall. Joyce's family will greet friends today, Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home, where the Parish Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Final interment will be with her husband, Joe in Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI, on Friday, September 2nd at 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions in Joyce's honor may be directed to Bronson @ Home Hospice Residence, 5470 Glen Cross Road, Battle Creek, MI 49015.
