Katherine Lea "Kathy" Thornton

d. April 1, 2026

Katherine Lea ‘Kathy’ Thornton, age76, passed away on Wednesday, April 1 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Kathy was born February 2, 1950, in Community Hospital, Battle Creek, Michigan, the loving daughter of Junior Burdette and Frances Ann (Gardner/Wilber) Thornton.

She attended the Battle Creek Public Schools and was a 1968 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School. She earned her associate degree in Education from Kellogg Community College.

Kathy worked part-time jobs at Willard Public Library, the Altrusa Nursery, Schulers restaurant in Marshall, Woman’s World clothing store in Lakeview Square Mall, and the Flying Stitch craft store, in addition to being employed full-time as an editor of government publications at the Hart-Doyle-Inouye Federal Center in Battle Creek, where she retired after 40 years.

In her retirement, she was employed at Mission Car Wash on Beckley Road, where she enjoyed greeting and getting to know the customers.

Throughout her working career, Kathy always enjoyed interacting with co-workers and the public, where her warm personality won her many friends. Her generous heart, steadfast determination, and deep love for all around her created strong relationships with all she came in contact with.

Kathy was always ready for an adventure, whether it would be going with her sister to a ‘Girl’s Weekend’ getaway, a summer vacation with the family, or a road trip to a restaurant she had heard about…which led us to Gizzard City in Potterville, and to the Riverside Cafe in Bellevue, where our relationship with the owners led to lifetime friendships. All due to her sense of adventure.

She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Michael Buckley, along with her parents, Frances and Junior.

She is survived by her sister, Diane Buckley, and brother, Kurt Thornton, both of Battle Creek; nephews, Marc (Lexi) Beckley, Tim (Caity) Beckley, and their children, Madeline and Miles Beckley.

She is also survived by her very close friends, Allison Logan and Jill Boehmer, leading to a very close relation to their children, Wyatt and Kendall Logan, and Aiden, Addison, and Alivia Boehmer, all of whom she adored.

She maintained lifetime relationships with many friends, including Janis (Fritz) Charameda, and Dayna Stults.

Kathy had been an active member of the First United Methodist Church throughout her life, where she served as a trustee, a member of the Leadership Board, chairperson of the Building and Grounds Committee, a member of the Martha Circle, where she served as chairperson; on the 2008 Centennial Committee, was a beloved Sunday School teacher; rang the Salvation Army Christmas collection bell, served on the Worship Committee, along with many other church groups.

She also enjoyed helping organize the church’s volleyball and summer softball teams, where she served as the official scorekeeper.

Kathy was involved with the local Junior League, the Area Council of Churches, the Cal-Co Quilters Guild, the Battle Creek Central High School Hall of Fame Committee, and the Barn Theatre of Augusta, where she attended continuously since a 1966 production of ‘Oliver’, where she was proud to say she saw the present Barn Theatre Producer/Artistic Director, Brendan Ragotzy, in his first appearance on the Barn’s stage as a young pickpocket, sitting under a table.

Kathy loved ‘live’ theater, and, along with seeing performances in local venues, she traveled around the Midwest and to Broadway to attend various productions.

She enjoyed playing games that created conversations/friendships, like her Euchre card parties and the Federal Center bowling leagues…as well as organizing monthly bunco group that met for many years.

She has collected Nativity scenes ever since her mother (or Santa) presented her with a new Nativity piece every year in her Christmas Stocking. Her collection has grown to over 130 unique displays.

Her love for reading voraciously led to her being part of local book clubs.

Kathy became very skilled at cross-stitch, creating treasured pieces of art she made for her family and friends.

Her memory will continue to inspire and uplift those who came in contact with Kathy to be friendly to everyone. The Battle Creek community has lost someone whose presence brightened countless encounters. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Friends will be received 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2026, at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral-Cremation-Preneed Care in Battle Creek.

A service to celebrate Kathy’s life will be officiated by Pastor Larry French at First United Methodist Church, 12:00 noon Saturday, April 11, 2026. Internment will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 111 E. Michigan Ave., Battle Creek, MI 49014; or the Frances Thornton Historical Society Fund, payable to the Battle Creek Community Foundation, 32 W. Michigan Ave., Suite 1, Battle Creek, MI 49017.
