Kathryn Katie Smith

Kathryn Jane "Katie" Smith of Gun Lake (Shelbyville), MI and formerly of Battle Creek, MI passed away Saturday May 24, 2014 at the age of 93. Katie was born in 1921 in Pottervillle, MI to Frank Maurer and Jenny (Starkweather) Maurer and was the 5th of seven children. She was married to James Elmer Smith on July 4, 1941 in Montrose MI with James preceding her in death on December 27, 1999. Katy spent her entire working career at the Eaton Corporation of Battle Creek, retiring in 1975. For nearly 40 years after her retirement, Katie devoted herself to her family and friends, especially her grandchildren. Katie loved gardening, cooking, golfing, spending time with her dear friends and living on the lake. Katie is survived by her daughter, Sharon Schimmel of Dexter, MI; granddaughter, Jenifer Michos (Schimmel) of Ann Arbor, MI, and grandson, Jonathan Schimmel of Walnut Creek, CA. She is also survived by her five great-grandchildren, who were fortunate to know her well and captured their own memories of her rich life at Gun Lake.
Family and Friends are invited to a visitation at Farley Estes Funeral Home, Battle Creek, MI at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, May 28, 2014. The funeral service will be immediately following at 12:30 PM and a graveside service at Ft. Custer National Cemetery at 2 PM.
