Kawinn E. "Kay" Hopkins, age 76, of Battle Creek passed away unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, April 16, 2019 at the Evergreen Senior Care & Rehab Center. She was born in Battle Creek on February 28, 1943, the daughter of Harlow O. and Irene Anna (Spaulding) Maurer. Kay received her Associates Degree from Kellogg Community College and furthered her education at Sienna Heights University. She retired from Kellogg Community College after more than 30 years of faithful service.
Kay is survived by her children, Angela Hopkins and Mike (Valerie) Hopkins, both of Battle Creek; her grandson, Nate (Caitlin) Gillette of Utah; a niece, Gerrie Grimsley; nephews, Bob and John Maurer; and her beloved kitty, "Abby". She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Gale Maurer.
Kay loved music and was an accomplished violinist, playing with the Battle Creek Symphony for more than 40 years as well as being involved in the Battle Creek Youth Symphony. She also enjoyed listening to music, reading her Bible and traveling to the Holy Land.
Funeral services to celebrate Kay's life will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 19th in the chapel at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 1490 East Michigan Ave., Battle Creek.
