Kenneth "Ken" E. Holroyd of Richland, MI,
Ken, age 83, after a Christmas visit with family, passed away the night of December 25, 2013, at the Laurels of Sandy Creek, Wayland, MI.
Ken, the son of Milo and Emma (Bigelow) Holroyd, was born on February 3, 1930 in Kalamazoo, MI. A lifetime area resident, he graduated from Richland High School in 1949 and served his country honorably in the United States Army as a Corporal. Ken was self-employed his entire life working in construction, masonry work, and, his passion, farming and raising cattle. After his day of work was done, his hobbies included making bird feeders, collecting antiques, and watching the Detroit Tigers â even during the many down years!
On July 1, 1950 in Richland, Ken was united in marriage to the love of his life, the former Nancy J. Barber. Surviving is his wife of 63 years, Nancy; his daughter, Cheryl (Tom) Lanphear of Richland, MI; three sons, William (Pam) Holroyd of Portage, MI, Russell (Barb) Holroyd of Delton, MI, and Jim (Missy) Holroyd of Richland, MI; ten grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; three sisters, Elnora Lumbard of Kalamazoo, MI, Arlene (Bob) Strong of Merrill, MI, and Lillian Rackley of Plainwell, MI; two brothers, Delbert (Wanda) Holroyd and Milo (Jackie) Holroyd, both of Kalamazoo, MI, as well as many nieces and nephews. Ken was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Edith, Nellie, Myrtle, LaVon and Mable and by two brothers, Wilbur and Bob Holroyd.
The Graveside Service to celebrate Ken's life will be held on Monday, December 30th at 2:00 p.m. at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI with Pastor Andrew Holt officiating and the United States Army Honor Guard and the Fort Custer Honor Guard bestowing full, military honors. Family and friends will be received on Monday, December 30th from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Richland Chapel, 9170 East D Avenue (M-89), where the procession to Fort Custer will leave the funeral home at 1:35 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ken's honor may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association, 350 E. Michigan Avenue, Suite 20, Kalamazoo, MI 49007.
