LaRita J. “Rita” Finney, 94, of Battle Creek, died peacefully on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at The Villa in Marshall, with her family at her side.

LaRita Jeannette “Rita” Elliott and Charles Delaine Finney were united in marriage on October 20. 1951, at Lakeview Baptist Church. Rita was preceded in death by Charlie, her husband of 68+ years. Surviving are their children, Larry (Sue) Finney of Battle Creek, Paula (Glen) Roble of Bellevue, Steve Finney and son-in-law, Ralph Cummins all of Battle Creek; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; five nieces and nephews and their families. Rita was preceded in death by her parents; and a daughter, Sara (Ralph) Finney-Cummins.

Rita Finney, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away leaving a legacy of love, laughter, and remarkable achievements. Her life was a tapestry woven with family, adventure, and an indomitable spirit.

Born and raised in her hometown of Battle Creek, Michigan. Rita graduated from Lakeview High School in 1949, where her peers voted her "Most Athletic," a title that foreshadowed her lifelong passion for sports and competition. Rita's zest for life was evident in her adventurous pursuits, which included swimming, fishing, and an enduring love for the outdoors.

At the age of 70, Rita took her first plunge into the Goguac Lake Swim, an annual event where she thrived for a decade, setting several age group records. Her dedication to the sport extended into the masters swimming program, where she earned numerous medals and added to her collection of age group records. Her accomplishments in the pool, achieved later in life, are a testament to her determination and unyielding spirit.

Rita had a deep love for her family, delighting in the company of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She filled their lives with joy, laughter, and stories of her adventures. Her friends in Florida held a special place in her heart, and she cherished the time spent with them, whether playing card games, sharing boat rides, or simply enjoying the beauty of life together.

A lover of nature, Rita found peace and excitement in bird watching and blue gill fishing. She had an affinity for dogs, who were her loyal companions throughout her life. Her days brimmed with the simple joys that brought her closer to the world and her loved ones.

Rita’s life was rich and full, marked by her sense of adventure, her love for her family and friends, and her unassuming yet profound accomplishments. She will always be remembered for her bright spirit, her kind heart, and her passion for living life to the fullest.

Her family invites those who knew and loved her to celebrate the extraordinary life of Rita Finney, a woman who truly embodied grace, strength, and love.

A graveside service to celebrate Rita’s life will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2025. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (www.stjude.org). Arrangements are by Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Cremation Preneed Care.
