Letha Evelyn (Morford) Scott of Gull Lake (Richland), MI


Letha Scott, age 92, of Gull Lake (Richland), MI, the retired Owner and Operator of the Gull Lake View Golf Club and Resort, died Wednesday morning, August 14, 2013 at her residence and surrounded by her loving family.

Letha, the daughter of Floyd W. and Flossie E. (Mott) Morford, was born on January 20, 1921 in Barry Township. She was a lifetime area resident and a 1939 graduate of Delton High School.

On September 28, 1940 in Hickory Corners, MI, Letha was united in marriage to Darl Samuel Scott, who preceded her in death on October 26, 1999 after 59 years of marriage.

Letha always enjoyed working. Her first job out of high school was as a switchboard operator for the Hickory Corners telephone company. She shared many stories about the early days of party lines. While raising three boys, she also was a school bus driver for the Richland School District. In the mid-fiftys, she and Darl were co-developers of the Scott Park development on Gilkey Lake. They opened the Gull Lake Motel in 1961 and managed that until its sale in 1968. In 1963, they co-founded Gull Lake View Golf Club and Resort. Letha was actively involved in the management of the golf courses until 1999, but she always had time for her family and friends!

Surviving are her three sons, Charles D. (Betsie) Scott of Augusta, Floyd W. Scott of Scottsdale, AZ and James E. (Deborah) Scott of Hickory Corners; five grandchildren Steven Scott of Portland, OR, Jon (Starla) Scott of Augusta, Rob Scott of Yspilanti, MI, Ashleigh (Jack) Kosin of Richland and Kasey (Lindsay) Scott of Palm Beach Gardens, FL and by five great grandchildren. Letha was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Howard Morford, daughter-in-law, Mary Jane Scott and grandson, Samuel Scott.

A Memorial Gathering to celebrate Letha's life will be held on Tuesday, September 17th from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Gull Lake View Golf Club, 7417 N. 38th Street, Augusta. A Private, Family Graveside Service will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Darl. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Letha's honor may be directed to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, 222 N. Kalamazoo Mall, Suite 100, Kalamazoo, MI 49007 or the charity of your choice.
