Lorraine A. Squires, age 89, of Crossroads Village in Portage and formerly of Hickory Corners, died on Friday evening, April 1, 2016 at the Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo. She was born in Kalamazoo on May 20, 1926, the daughter of Dowd D. and Irene (Root) Doubblestein. Lorraine owned & operated Squires Grocery on Gull Lake for more than 17 years. She was a life-member of the Gull Lake View Golf Course and also worked there for more than 20 years. Lorraine enjoyed golfing, playing cards & Bingo, wintering in Florida, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren & great-great grandchildren.
On December 28, 1957 in Otsego, Lorraine was united in marriage to Gifford A. "Gip" Squires; he sadly preceded her in death on March 8, 2008. She is survived by her two daughters, Claudann Tebo of Bangor and Irene D. "DeeDee" Rice of Bessemer; her two sons, Barry A. Squires of Delton and David R. (Leni) Rice of Schoolcraft; 9 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren, and her many dear friends at Crossroads Village. Lorraine was also preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers, Gerald Doubblestein, Kenneth Doubblestein and Darl Doubblestein.
The family will receive friends 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Richland Chapel, 9170 East D. Avenue, (M-89) where a memorial service to celebrate Lorraine's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions in Lorraine's honor may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
