Luis Alvarez-Mendez, 64, of Battle Creek, died March 7, 2026. Luis was born on October 7, 1961, in Vedado, Ciudad De La Habana, Cuba, born to Isaac Alvarez and Clara Mendez. Mr. Luis Alvarez-Mendez died peacefully in his sleep in his home. Luis held many jobs throughout his life, including work in hotel reception and environmental services. He was especially proud of his 17 years as a chauffeur for Greg’s Car Service/City Cab in Battle Creek. He came to the United States at age 19 and built a life filled with love, hard work, and strong connections.
Fishing was one of his favorite hobbies, and he enjoyed quiet time by the water with family and friends. He was a talented cook who loved preparing big meals—especially traditional Cuban dishes. Known for his humor and warm personality, Luis could always make others laugh. He was also a gifted musician who sang, played drums and guitar, and once formed his own band. He has uploaded many songs to YouTube.
Luis shared a deep bond with his wife, Priscilla. They enjoyed dinner dates, traveling together, and the joy of each other’s company. Calm, caring, and deeply emotional, Luis will be missed by all who knew him.
Luis is survived by his wife, Priscilla Frederick; his mother‑in‑law, Leatrice Dunklin; and his children: Jack (Chauntell) Rucker; Matthew, Cecilia, and Lacilia Frederick; Alex Graves; Kasheen Kellis; Evonna Evans; and Cindy Meints. His siblings survived him: Caridad and Gladys Fernandez Mendez; Angel Michel and Consuelo Diaz Mendez; and Renardo (Etta) and Jerome Frederick, along with many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family in the United States and Cuba. He also cherished his close friendship with Jerry Cumper.
