Major Steven Roger “Batman” McMurray passed away on 24 June 2023 after a long illness.

Steve was born in Kalamazoo and lived in the area all of his life.  He graduated from Vicksburg High School, where he was the Ping Pong Champion for 4 years in a row.  He went on to Michigan State University and during that time he joined the Michigan Air National Guard as a ROMAD.  He loved working the range in Grayling, which he did a lot.

After graduation he became an officer and a highly decorated pilot.  He flew the A-37 Dragonfly and the A-10 Warthog.  He was a full-time technician, an instructor pilot, training officer, and Chief of Standard Evaluation.  Steve also flew ten years for United Airlines.

Steve was a fun-loving guy who loved to fish, swim, and ride his bike around Austin Lake.  He was also an award-winning water skier.  If you couldn’t find Steve on the lake, you could find him cheering on his beloved Spartans from the stands in East Lansing.

Steve is survived by his wife, Linda, Daughter, Alicia, son-in law, Chris and two wonderful grandsons Maxwell and Beau.  Steve has many family and friends who he loved dearly.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Roger and Joan McMurray and his dogs, CoCo (Wanky), Savannah and Rafi.  He loved animals so much!

Many thanks to the Battle Creek VA Medical Center, Community Living Center staff for all the great care, they are a special group of people.

A memorial service to celebrate Steve’s life will be held 0930 (9:30 a.m.), Friday, 30 June 2023 at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Augusta Chapel 307 N.
