Mardell A. Hawthorne, age 83, of Bellevue passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday morning, June 15, 2021. She was born in Battle Creek on June 23, 1937, the daughter of Arthur J. and Mary "Mae" C. (England) Waltz. Mardell spent many years as a home maker, raising her children, and then worked for several years at the Grizzly Bar and the Sports Page in Battle Creek.
Mardell married Rex Morris Hawthorne in Angola, Indiana on August 21, 1954; he sadly preceded her in death on August 16, 1997. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Rexanne Frost on December 10, 2009; her parents; and her brothers & sisters, Arthur Waltz, Jr., Eber Waltz, Elizabeth Bullock, Marion Bauman, George Waltz, and William Waltz. Mardell is survived by her children, Christina (Jerry) Humphreys of Battle Creek, Monica (William) Yarbrough of Texas, Mary Eberhard of Battle Creek, and Martin (Connie) Hawthorne of Bellevue; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; and her brother, Robert (Cindy) Waltz of Texas.
Mardell was actively involved in her children's school activities, and served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, 4-H Leader, and Bluebirds & Campfire Girls leader. A very talented seamstress, she made her children's clothes and blessed many with quilts and baby blankets. Mardell enjoyed visiting the casino, playing cards with family, bowling, camping, gardening, snowmobiling, motorcycles, reading, and spending time with her family.
The family will receive friends, 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, June 20th at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Battle Creek where funeral services to celebrate Mardell's life will be held 1:00 p.m., Monday, June 21st with her granddaughter, Pastor Gretchen O'Dell, officiating. The service will be live-streamed and may be viewed at https://vimeo.com/565799878 . Interment will follow at Union Cemetery, Maple Grove Township.
