Margueritte E. (Hill) "Peggy" Groat, age 95, of Battle Creek, MI, died Tuesday morning at the Calhoun County Care Facility, Battle Creek surrounded by her loving family.
Peggy, the daughter of Joseph and Laura (Padgett) Hill, was born on January 26, 1919 in Indianapolis, IN and moved to the Battle Creek area in 1923. She was a 1935 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School, attended Argubright Business College and was employed by several doctor and dentist offices as a receptionist and bookkeeper.
Margueritte E. "Peggy" Hill married Gustave J. Groat on September 4, 1937 at St. Philip Roman Catholic Church. Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, "Gus" on November 7, 2007. Surviving are her son, Gustave J. (Judy) Groat, Jr. of Marshall; three grandchildren; Nicholas, Michael (Vicky) and Matthew (Katrina) Groat; four great-grandsons; and two great-granddaughters; a brother, James Hill of Battle Creek; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Peggy was also preceded in death by brothers, Fred Hill and William Hill; and sisters, Mary Lou Griffin, June Breslin and JoAnn Barnum.
She was a member of St. Philip Catholic Church, St. Joseph Catholic Church and its Altar Society, of which she was a past president. She was a former member of Gen, George A. Custer Post 54 American Legion Auxiliary, a former member and past president of the Calhoun County Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary. She was known as "Peggy" to all family members, friends, neighbors and associates. Peggy enjoyed ceramics, cooking and sewing. She especially loved being with her family.
Friends will be received by Peggy's family 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Francis Marotti 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 24, 2014 at St. Phillip Roman Catholic Church, 92 Capital Avenue, NE, Battle Creek. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
