Marjorie (Star) Horwitz

Marjorie L. (Star) Horwitz, age 87, died at home on Sunday, May 21, 2017.

Marge was born in Battle Creek, Michigan on December 31, 1929 to Julius and Lillian (Feder) Star. Marge graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1948. She attended Michigan State University.

On September 12, 1954, Marge married Albert "Larry" Horwitz at the Post Tavern Inn. Marge and Larry stayed in Battle Creek to operate Julius Star, Inc. Marge's parents began the business in 1937, and she worked there until her retirement in 2000.

Marge was an active volunteer in many local organizations. She was awarded the "Good Egg" Volunteer of the Year in 2008 by the Binder Park Zoo. In 2013, she was the first recipient of the Battle Creek Art Center's "Our Gem" Award given to the outstanding volunteer at the Center.

Marge was the oldest active member of Temple Beth-El. She served on the Board of Directors for many years and was active in the Sisterhood.

Marge is survived by her daughters, Sherri (Glenn) Ozawa of Chandler, AZ and Vicki Sue Horwitz of Battle Creek. She was a loving grandmother to her grandchildren, Captain Jeffrey Horwitz and his wife Jenna, of Maple Hill, N.C., Kimberly Horwitz and Gabe Pompa of Las Vegas, NV., Elise Ozawa of Irvine, CA., and Eric Ozawa of Chandler, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents Julius and Lillian Star, her husband Larry in 1997, her son, Randy on April 21, 2017, her sister, Edith Tamkin and her brother, Sherman Star.

The funeral service to celebrate Marge's life will be held on Thursday, May 25th at 11:00 a.m. at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home and Cremation Care, Battle Creek with Cantor Annie Rose of Temple Beth-El officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Battle Creek. There will be a visitation for the family to meet friends on Wednesday, May 24th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
