Mark Lawrence Scharping, 69, of Battle Creek, MI, died peacefully at home on January 28, 2022. He was born June 6, 1952, the son of Vernon and Gladys (Robbins) Scharping. Mark grew up in the East Leroy area and was a 1970 graduate of Athens High School. Raised as one of Jehovah's Witnesses, he was one of many among the third generation of Witnesses in his family line.
Mark married Alyce Faye Crampton on June 6, 1992. Surviving are his wife Alyce; his father, Vern Scharping of Battle Creek; a brother, Tim (Renee) Scharping of Hastings; a "grandson by choice" Emmett Crampton; close friends Skip Young and Gregg Scupholm and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and their families. Mark was preceded in death by his mother, Gladys Scharping, sister Sherry and brother Jimmy.
As a youth, Mark grew up in the age of "muscle cars" and he was hooked on their speed and power! The world of drag racing became his leisure passion. Over the years he attended many events and collected a wealth of t-shirts and ball caps signed by drag racing champions. Each September, "The Big Go," at Indianapolis Raceway Park, is where he loved to be.
Particularly endearing about Mark was his loyalty to his friends. He never took them for granted. No matter when he met you or how far away you lived, Mark took the initiative to stay in touch, enjoying many friendship that lasted a lifetime.
If you knew Mark, you were familiar with his sense of humor. His dry wit could catch you off guard, but it always made you laugh and made the simplest of activities memorable!
He had a special place in his heart for Emmett, his 7 year old grandson, and Emmett felt the same about "Da." They enjoyed spending time together; talking, playing, or watching a movie.
Mark will be remembered with love by good friends, Emmett, and his family.
