Martha Phelps Kelly, age 69 of Battle Creek, unexpectedly passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2024. She was born in Battle Creek on December 16, 1954. She was the loving daughter of Dr. Keith and Dorothy “Dottie” (Hensel) Phelps and graduated from Lakeview High School with the Class of 1973. Martha received her RN certification from Bronson School of Nursing in 1978 and later graduated from Western Michigan University in 1982 with a B.S. degree and obtained her Physician Assistant certification.
Martha was a true champion of children and lovingly cared for thousands of kids and their families. She was a Physician’s Assistant at Cereal City Pediatrics for more than 31 years until retiring on May 27, 2021. Shortly after her retirement, Martha’s passion brought her to Minges Brook Elementary School where she has been lovingly serving as a Paraprofessional in the Pre-K room.
Martha faithfully served her community with everything she had and was always there to support anyone in need. She was lovingly described as “kindness on steroids” by friends. She was a faithful member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church for many years. Martha loved gardening, traveling, was well known for her cookie cakes, and most of all, she loved spoiling her granddaughters and spending time with her family.
Martha is survived by her high school sweetheart, Gregg Kelly. They were married in Battle Creek on July 9, 1977. She is also survived by her children, Mallory Kelly of Virginia, Ryan (Dr. Allyson) Kelly of Tennessee, Morgan Kelly and Preston Kelly, both of Battle Creek; her precious granddaughters, Joelle and Audrey Kelly of Tennessee; her brother, Dr. Dennis (Dr. Amy) Phelps of Colorado; in-laws Mark (Laura) Kelly of Athens, Sue (Tom) Rose of Battle Creek, Al Dixon of Coldwater, and several nieces and nephews.
