Mary K. Bates, 86, of Battle Creek, died Thursday evening, January 10, 2013 at the Calhoun County Medical Care Facility surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on May 29, 1926 the daughter of Jacob and Rose (Madritsch) Millonig.
Mary was an accomplished seamstress and throughout the years volunteered her services to many community organizations such as the Leila Follies and the Irish-American Dancers. She was a member of the St. Philip Catholic Church where she served with the Council of Catholic Women. She was also a member of the Leila Hospital Auxiliary, the Altar & Rosary Society in Minnesota, the Pennfield Farm & Garden Club; the Battle Creek Irish-American Club and the German-American Club of Kalamazoo. Mary and her husband, Chuck, enjoyed traveling. They made numerous trips abroad including several trips to Austria to visit Mary’s relatives.
On September 7, 1946 in Milwaukee, WI, Mary was united in marriage to Charles E. “Chuck” Bates; he sadly preceded her in death on March 5, 2010. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Bates (Mark) McClintock of Minneapolis, MN; four sons, Charles (Cinda) Bates of Bettendorf, IA, Patrick (June) Bates of Houston, TX, Jim (Kathy) Bates and Richard Bates, both of Battle Creek; nine grandchildren, Michael (Lisa) McClintock, Mitchell McClintock, Audra Bates, Bradley Bates, Nicole Bates, Jason (Trisha) Bates, Bryan (Julie) Bates, Kristi Bates, Steven (Megan) Bates and ten great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Helen Braeger and an infant brother, Albert Millonig.
At the request of the family, they will receive friends 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, January 14, 2013 at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, where the Parish Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m., Monday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at St. Philip Catholic Church with Rev. Francis Marotti, Celebrant. Interment will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Mary’s honor may be made to the Council of Catholic Women at St. Philip or the St. Vincent DePaul Society at St. Philip.
