Maxine M. Hammond, age 95, of Battle Creek, Michigan, passed away at Glenn Arbor Hospice, Sunday, March 5, 2023, with her family at her side.
Maxine was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, on January 19, 1928, to Arthur and Hazel (Walters) Reynolds. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Ypsilanti, class of 1946.
She married Harley C. Hammond July 8, 1946, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. They were married for 67 years until his death February 4, 2013. They lived and worked in the Ypsilanti area until they moved to Battle Creek in 1949.
Maxine was a stay-at-home mom raising her four children until 1968 when she went to work at Wolverine Cablevision where she held several positions including office manager, systems manager, and regional manager for TCI which took over operations from Cablevision. She retired in 1986. She volunteered at Battle Creek Health System, and was a Mary Kay representative for many years. Maxine was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church for more than 37 years. She served as the altar guild directress, bereavement chair and also was the publisher for the church newsletter for more than 25 years.
Maxine is survived by her children: Richard (Sally) Hammond of Marshall, Michigan, Linda (William) Elliott of Battle Creek, Doris (Gary) Hubbard of Battle Creek, and Barbara (Jeff) Shouldice of Battle Creek; seven grandchildren: William (Brenda) Elliott III, Amy (Ryan) Switzer, Stephanie (Michael) Griffin, Robert (Katia) Shouldice, Bradley (Heather) Shouldice, Jonathan (Carli) Hammond, and Amanda (Michael) Foley; seventeen great grandchildren: William Wiley, Hailey Anderson, Payton Switzer, Emerson Switzer, Jenna Elliott, Lilly Elliott, Ivan Shouldice, Pauline Shouldice, Caleb Shouldice, Owen Shouldice, Paisley Shouldice, Zachary Hubbard, Charlotte Hubbard, Avry Hamil, Genesis Milhoan, MacKenzie Hammond and Brittany Hammond, and one great great grandson, Ryan Shook. Also surviving is her sister Doris Himes, and sisters-in-law, Thelma Reynolds and Barbara Reynolds; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Kiyoko Hammond.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harley, sister Margaret Cloyd, brothers Donald Reynolds and James Reynolds, and grandchildren Gary L Hubbard Jr, Shawn Elliott and Tracey Hubbard.
As per her wishes, cremation has taken place. A service to celebrate Maxine’s life will be officiated by Reverend Kjersten Sullivan at Fort Custer National Cemetery 12:00 Noon Friday, April 14, 2023. Following the service, a luncheon to remember Maxine, will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church.
