Michael Leon Byers, Sr., 74, of Battle Creek, Michigan passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, June 15, 2025. He went through Heaven’s Gates and joined the love of his life, Teresa A. (Wood) Byers, who preceded him in death on June 26, 2014. They were united in marriage on November 2, 1991.
Mike, the eldest of five children, was born on July 5, 1950, in Battle Creek, Michigan to Hubert Leon and Velma Elaine (Finney) Byers. Mike grew up in Battle Creek, attended Gull Lake High School and became a journeyman machinist, retiring from TRMI in Fort Custer Industrial Park.
Mike leaves behind two loving daughters, Celeste Christine Byers Jackson and Margaret Elaine Byers; grandchildren, Kyrah Byers, Vaden Jackson, Riley Jackson, Amya Byers, Jayden Byers; great-grandchildren, Emberlyn Jackson, Leo Houston, Atreus Jackson; two sisters, Susan (James) Lawhead, Dawn Church; a brother, Vern Byers several cousins, nieces, nephews and their families. In addition to his wife, Mike was also preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Kathryn Byers and a grandson, Cyrus McDaniel.
Mike loved spending time with his family. He instilled in his children and family the importance of perseverance and working hard for what you want in life. Mike enjoyed spending time outdoors, whether it was splitting wood for the winter or tinkering on things while his cat, “Tig” followed him around. He made sure the songbirds were always fed. He also felt the need to make sure that the lonesome opossums were fed during the winter. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Friends will be received 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 20, 2025, at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Cremation Preneed Care, where funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 20th. Committal and interment will follow at Hicks Pennfield Cemetery.
