In Loving Memory of Michael Alan Couey Jr.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Alan Couey Jr., who left us on May 15, 2025, in Battle Creek, Michigan, at the age of 53. Michael was born on April 18, 1972, in New Mexico to Michael Couey Sr. and Pamela (Chris) Shafe.
He is survived by his loving spouse, Heather Couey, with whom he shared 18 years together, marrying in 2017. Michael’s legacy lives on through his four children: James Couey (Ashley), Allison Couey, Hayley Wheaton, and Matthew Wheaton. He was a proud grandfather to four beautiful grandchildren: Addison Couey, Aleah Couey, Avery Couey, and Elijah Couey. He is also survived by his parents, Michael Couey Sr. and Pamela (Chris) Shafe; his stepfather, Ray Shafe; his sister, Amylee (Creighton) Taylor and brother-in-law, Stephen (Sonia) Jones; as well as his beloved nieces and nephews: Cody Hennaut, Timothy Davis, Carsen Taylor, and Ren Jones. Additionally, Michael is survived by his in-laws, Jack and Cristine Jones.
A 1990 graduate of Battle Creek High School, Michael furthered his education at Kellogg Community College, graduating in 2011.
Throughout his life, Michael was a man of many talents. He was an avid motorcyclist, accomplished auto mechanic, and skilled carpenter and home builder. His love for music and his aspirations as a musician highlighted his creative spirit.
Michael had an inquisitive mind and an undeniable talent for learning new skills and pursuing various hobbies. He also had a special passion for camping and live music, often enjoying the simple pleasures of good concerts, a good bourbon, and the company of friends. He shared a deep love for travel, and he and Heather explored many exotic destinations together, creating memories that will be cherished forever.
Michael was also known for his unwavering generosity, kind heart, and unshakeable devotion to his family. He was a beloved member of the Battle Creek community and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Michael’s sudden passing, due to a heart attack, has left a profound void in the hearts of those who loved him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, and his spirit will forever be a part of their lives. May Michael's soul rest in peace.
A celebration of Michael’s life will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 23, 2025 at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Cremation Preneed Care, Battle Creek, followed by a luncheon at the American Legion Post # 298 228 N. 20th Street, Springfield, MI.
