Michael John Quartermaine, 84 of Augusta, Michigan died peacefully at home, with his family at his side on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
Mike was born June 20, 1940, in Battle Creek, Michigan to Harry, and Velma “June” (Coleman) Quartermaine. He grew up in Battle Creek and was a 1958 graduate of St. Philip Catholic Central High School. Mike honorably served our country for eight years as an active U.S. Coast Guard Reservist from 1960-1968. Mike trained and became a certified millwright and welder. His career as a Millwright at the Kellogg Company spanned 34 years, with Mike retiring in 1995.
Mike met the love of his life at a mutual friend's wedding in 1961. Mike & Carol Cutsinger were united in marriage on May 4, 1963, at St. Philip Catholic Church. Surviving are his wife, Carol; children, Carla (Dave) Whitaker of Vicksburg, MI, Peggy (Dan) Damon of Battle Creek, MI, Patrick (Cathy) Quartermaine of Collierville, TN, Lori (Bjorn) Green of Richland, MI; 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; two sisters Janet Garland of Battle Creek, MI and Carol Davis of Wellston, MI; brother, Jerry (Mary) Quartermaine of Lilly Lake, FL and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Harry & June and his stepfather, Lloyd McDonough; his brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Mary Jane Quartermaine; sister, Mary Jo Quartermaine; and brother-in-law Pete Garland.
Mike was a member of the NRA, Ducks Unlimited, the Kellogg 25-Year Club, along with being members, of the St. Ann Catholic Church, since 1973. Next to his faith in God, his wife and family were his greatest loves. He was a strong supporter of his children and grandchildren’s sporting endeavors, even following them across the country. Mike and Carol spent many special family vacations with their children and grandchildren, creating experiences and cultivating a love of adventure and of the outdoors. Mike was a lifelong athlete and participated in many sports. In recent years, he thoroughly enjoyed the game of golf. Mike loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Some of his fondest memories were of his time at the hunting cabin he shared with his lifelong friend, Craig Jones. Mike will be remembered as a man who lived a disciplined life with an incredible work ethic. He had a deep faith and a great love for God and Country. He was a patriot. Mike had a genuine, intentional heart, was immensely kind, and a friend to all. His family will deeply miss the smile he wore on his face every day.
Mike selflessly donated his body to Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine for education research, in hopes that medicine can gain the knowledge to help others in the future, as it did for him. The family is very grateful for the loving care provided by Chrissy Eakins with Gentiva Hospice and Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home.
Friends will be received from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2025, at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Cremation Preneed Care, 9170 East D Ave., Richland, MI.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. David Pinto at St. Ann Roman Catholic Church, 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2025. There will be a Celebration of Life luncheon in the social hall, immediately following the Mass from 12:00-2:00 p.m.
