Michael David Smith II

Michael David Smith II, 46, of Marshall, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.

Born January 2, 1980, Michael was the oldest of two children. He attended Shepherd schools before graduating from Harper Creek High School in 1998. He later studied computer science at Mid Michigan College in Mount Pleasant.

Michael was a tinkerer by nature. Curious about how things worked, he enjoyed computers, electronics and gaming, and was always experimenting with new ideas. He liked working with his hands, creating origami and intricate designs from simple materials like paper clips. He also designed electronic circuit boards and was known for patiently helping others learn new skills or solve technical problems.

Michael worked in restaurant management, computer and technical support, the automotive industry and manufacturing.

He found joy outdoors, whether fishing, canoeing, snorkeling in Gull Lake or exploring the woods. He enjoyed music, especially the band Tool, and was always willing to lend a hand, including helping his father with his model railroad. Michael loved animals, especially his dogs, and was known for his kind heart.

In his later years, Michael gave greater attention to his faith.

Michael was preceded in death by his sister, Sarah Smith.

He is survived by his mother, Joanne Mikus Smith; his father, Michael Smith; his stepmother, Carol Smith; his stepsiblings, Melissa Suggs, Jared Askew and Jami Fields; his niece, Aliyah Smith; his nephew, Isaiah Watts; his great-nephew, Louis Ferris; and his aunts, uncles and many cousins.

A celebration of Michael's life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 16, at Downtown Church in Battle Creek. A luncheon will immediately follow the service. Personal messages for his family may be shared at www.farleyestesdowdle.com.
