Nancy Ann Marshall

Nancy Ann Marshall, 91, of Augusta, died Saturday morning, May 6, 2023, at The Upjohn in Heritage Community of Kalamazoo, MI, with her family at her side.

Nancy was born in South Bend, Indiana, on June 29, 1931, to Charles A. and Alice I. (Burgess) Mais.  Sadly when she was 2-1/2 years old her mother died of an illness and she went to live with her dear Aunt Hilda (Donald Hughes) in Hilliards, MI.  Her father remarried several years later and Nancy was brought back to South Bend.  She was very fond of her stepmother, Hortense “Tansy” E. (Ewers) Mais, always referring to her as “my mom”.

Nancy was a 1949 graduate of John Adams High School, in South Bend.   In July of that same year, she married the love of her life, LeRoy “Roy” W. Marshall, in Mishawaka, IN, who preceded her in death by 15 years.  They remained in South Bend where she was employed as a secretary at a law firm until 1952 when their first child was born.  In 1957 they moved to Battle Creek, Michigan, where their second daughter was born in 1959.  Eleven years later Nancy began working for Battle Creek Public Schools as a secretary.  After retirement in 1993, she worked for Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Cremation Preneed Care in their Augusta Chapel.

Nancy was a member of Augusta Bible Baptist Church for many years.  She enjoyed reading, knitting, cross-stitch, and solving puzzles but her greatest joy was spending time with family.  She also enjoyed camping, weekly domino games and trips with friends.

Nancy is survived by her daughters Zuellen (Daniel) Wiersma of Clarendon Hills, IL, and Susan (Charles) Whitman of Augusta, grandchildren Joshua (Kaitlin) Wiersma, Jessica Wiersma, Nathan (Carrie) Wiersma, Andrew Wiersma and Leslie (Jerry) Thompson, Ashley Whitman, Colleen Whitman, and Colin Whitman and great-grandchildren Henry Wiersma, Madeleine Wiersma, Lucy Wiersma, Isaac Wiersma, Maisie Wiersma, and Kaiyah Thompson. In addition to her husband, Nancy was preceded in death by her brother, Rollin C. Mais and her sister, Gladys VanDeWalle.

A service to celebrate Nancy’s life will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 17, 2023, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband, Roy.   A graveside memorial service will also be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, June 5, 2023.
