Nieves Mauricio Mangosing

August 6, 1940 — March 22, 2021

Dr. Nieves Mauricio Mangosing

On Monday, March 22, 2021, Dr. Nieves Mauricio Mangosing passed away peacefully in her sleep in Pflugerville, Texas. She was 80 years old.

She was born on August 6, 1940 in Nueva Ecija, Philippines to Nicanor Mauricio and Segundina Cailing Mauricio. Nieves graduated from Nueva Ecija High School, Cabanatuan City, Philippines in 1957. Thereafter, she attended and received her undergraduate degree from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines ("UST"). She went on to earn a medical degree from UST in 1965. After receiving her medical degree, Nieves became the Municipal Health Officer of Nueva Ecija, Philippines. Nieves married Victorio Guieb Mangosing on June 24, 1966 in Manila Philippines. They were married for 41 years and raised three daughters.

Nieves emigrated from the Philippines to the United States in 1971. Her family followed her shortly thereafter. After achieving licensure and completing her medical residency, Nieves came to Battle Creek in 1983 To begin her career as a physician with the Veterans Administration Medical Center. She cared for and served the nation's veterans for almost 25 years. During retirement, she enjoyed reading and spending time with her grandchildren.

Nieves was a loving mom and grandmother, inspiring mentor, beloved friend, loyal sister, compassionate physician, optimistic and hardworking immigrant and grieving widow. She was the matriarch of her family.

Nieves loved to tell stories -- she thought she was a comedian. She loved Elvis. She loved books and really wanted to be a journalist instead of a physician. She prayed the Rosary daily. A Leo under the western zodiac and a dragon under the eastern, she lived up to both signs whether you believed in that stuff or not.

Nieves is survived by her children Victoria M. (Ronald A.) Almiron of Chicago, IL, Grace Mangosing (Ben MacFadden) of West Olive, MI, and Agnes Johannesen of Pflugerville, TX., and 3 grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, older brother, Marciano Mauricio, and husband, Victorio G. Mangosing.
