Ray S. Jenney

Ray S. Jenney Jr., 85, of East Leroy, died peacefully March 27, 2020.

Ray was born September 12, 1934, in Battle Creek to Ray and Elsie (Fisk) Jenney Sr. He married Margaret E. Dennis on April 18, 1956. She preceded him in death (2016) after a long battle with MS.

Ray was a longtime Battle Creek retailer. He began work in high school at Haig's shoes and eventually became the store's manager. He later managed stores for Jacobson's, Cole's, Dancer's and owned his clothing store, Jenney's of Battle Creek. Ray was also a member of the Downtown Development Association of Battle Creek and served a number of terms as the association's president. He finished his working career as head of maintenance at the Brickyard Medical Facility.

Ray was also a proud member of the Battle Creek Central class of 1953. He helped coordinate reunions for many years, contacting former classmates and designing decorations for the events.

In his retirement Ray enjoyed painting, building scale models of historic buildings and houses from around the Battle Creek area. He also built hundreds of bird houses for friends and family.

He also enjoyed landscaping around his home. He especially enjoyed sharing this activity with the help of his cousin Joe Masters and friend Kevin Folger.

Ray is survived by his two children, Ray (Karol) Jenney III of Battle Creek and Patricia (Thomas) Fetters of Albion Township; a granddaughter, Sarah Fetters of Kalamazoo; his sister Carol (Robert) Amy of Georgia; and sister-in-law and good friend Ann Hanke of East Leroy. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother & sister-in-law, Asa (Joyce) Jenney; a sister & brother-in-law, Betty (Richard) Brown; and a sister, Janice Jenney.

As per Ray's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no memorial service. Those wishing to make memorial contributions in Ray's memory are invited to consider Hospice of Southwest Michigan, 5470 Glenn Cross Road, Battle Creek, MI 49015 or a charity of the donor's choice.
