Richard "Gill" Eggertz

October 18, 1963 — November 8, 2013

Richard Gill Eggertz, Jr., age 50, of Battle Creek and formerly of South Carolina died unexpectedly on Friday, November 8, 2013. Gill was born in Charleston, South Carolina on October 18, 1963, the loving son of Richard Gill and Louise F. (Foster) Eggertz. A memorial service will be held 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 19, 2013 in the Palm Garden Room at the Hart-Dole-Inouye Federal Center, 74 N. Washington Ave., Battle Creek. In lieu of flowers, local donations may be directed to Laurie Brumm at DLA Log Info Svc-TST, 74 N. Washington Ave, Battle Creek, MI. 49037 (269) 961-5193. The family will hold a memorial service in South Carolina at a later date.

Gill was a civilian government employee. He worked as an Inventory Specialist and then later became a Budget Analyst for the DoD, Defense
Logistics Agency. His 22 year government career began in Jacksonville, Florida. Ten years ago, he was promoted to a position at the Federal
Center in Battle Creek Michigan. Gill started with Disposition Services (formerly DRMS) at Jacksonville, FL approximately 22 years ago. He came in to be the Information Technology (IT) Point of Contact (POC) for this site. When Gill first arrived, the first thing he encountered was a storage room filled with boxes of Zenith 248 Computers and monitors. He setup and trained the Jacksonville employees on how to use these computers, which was a major task as most of the employees had never used a computer. The 3B2s Server Era followed, where these computers were connected on a network to process DRMO transactions into a System called DAISY. This ERA began with dial-up modem networks; then followed a fiber network environment which required Gill to run fiber throughout the establishment of Jacksonville, FL. In addition to being the IT POC, he was also the DAISY Accountable Property Officer. Gill learned DAISY System from the ground up, which required him to learn the Disposition Service Disposal process.
Gill saw many changes within the IT world. He installed software by floppy disk; as there was no automated way to install software at the time. Some of these software products had over 100 disks needed to install. He saw an evolution of computers: dumb terminals to personal computers to 3B2 servers, to HP servers, to a LAN environment and let's not forget the DAISY Barcoding functionality.
As time progressed, there became a title for individuals that perform IT functions at the DRMS field sites – System Monitor. With this new title came more responsibilities. Gill supported numerous off-sites that were under Jacksonville. Like GITMO, Puerto Rico, Panama, Tampa and a few others. He provided outstanding support for all sites that he was responsible for. When an opportunity came up for Gill to get a promotion and come to HQ DRMS, Battle Creek, MI approximately 10+ years ago, he jumped on it. Upon his arrival at DRMS-C he was involved in the MARD application, and then moved into the budget world. He ended up taking on the entire IT budget for DRMS and learned all aspects to this responsibility. Many would seek Gill out for his advice and knowledge of the budget world. Eventually, his career would lead him to being responsible for the IT budget for both Logistics Information Services and Disposition Services. Gill's customer base was vast as he worked with individuals from all of the DLA-J6 activities in regards to budget. His knowledge and opinions were highly valued by all that he came into contact with. He will truly be missed.

Budget analyst receives fourth quarter peer award

Gill Eggertz received the 4th Quarter Individual Peer Award for astounding his nominator and colleague Nickie Whitney with "his commitment to the DLA Logistics Information Service mission and dedication to supporting those around him." Whitney describes Eggertz as an exemplary employee "who consistently goes above and beyond to motivate his colleagues … the true definition of a team player."
During the 4th quarter, Whitney noted that Eggertz served in his primary position as the IT Budget Team leader and as the acting branch chief for eight weeks, making him responsible for leading all 18 people in the TSM Budget, Administrative, and Asset Management areas. Whitney explained that the acting branch chief involved Eggertz in complex asset management projects as he managed the logistics to reorganize that work area to create a more efficient working environment.
"He appointed AM leads and jumpstarted the HDIFC and Disposition Services field site inventories," Whitney said. "These inventories are extremely complex and time consuming, but Mr. Eggertz's organized and concise approach coupled with his extraordinary leadership skills helped keep these projects on task."
Whitney compared Eggertz work with DLA Director Vice Adm. Harnitchek's Big Idea to reduce inventory by exploiting how it helped AM personnel and senior leadership better understand the IT requirements of DLA Logistics Information Service and DLA Disposition Services. She credits Eggertz's persistence and follow up as the "key to success on this project." Under Eggertz's direction, rooms in the AM that were overrun with assets were cleaned out and assets were introduced to inventory or excessed. He understands that true success will be achieved when our equipment areas are well organized and all unneeded equipment is reutilized or turned in.
Despite the extra work with the AM staff, Whitney said Eggertz's dedication to his responsibilities on the Budget Team did not waiver. As one of only two budget analysts for the Information Technology, directorate, Eggertz helps manage more than $63 million in IT requirements. Whitney praised the depth of knowledge he possesses on requirements and DLA's financial processes as well as the training and support he provided her that allowed her to assume more responsibility.
"He also provided invaluable input for multiple budget data calls, including the prioritization of remaining FY13 contract requirements and the submission of our FY14 requirements," Whitney said. "Ensuring that this information was accurate and submitted in a timely manner was extremely important in light of the ongoing realignment efforts."
Whitney also credited Eggertz with "above and beyond support" to a project to begin depreciation of the Reutilization Business Integration project. She said the documentation he provided to financial analysts and accountable property officers directly contributed to calculating the cost and value of the RBI program during its lifecycle. Above all, Whitney said that Eggertz "simply reinforced the opinion of many of his colleagues that he is a hardworking and committed leader dedicated to the DLA mission."

And the Angels wept:
We cry not for the recently departed, for they are under the loving care of our Lord. We know there is a better existence beyond His worldly planet and the arrival in Heaven is the ultimate comfort one of His children can attain. Our tears of sorrow are shed for those left behind.

For those left behind we say:
We also cry not for the departed. We live on earth for the acceptance of the Lord's love & guidance. For it is for those that remain earth bound we shed tears of sorrow. We will pray to the Lord to offer comfort & guidance in this the most difficult of times. We pray for Him to look over your family, to offer you His love and protection. The Lord is mysterious and we question not his decisions. The Lord offers His love to one and all without question and without reservation.
