Richard Grant "Dick" Hudson, Jr., age 96, of Kalamazoo passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, September 16, 2023.   Dick was born on May 28, 1927, in Lansing, Michigan to Richard Grant Hudson, Sr. and Marian Monteith.  Dick was married to Lois Peterson Hudson on June 24, 1950, whom he met at Denison University in Granville, Ohio.  He is survived by his three children: Jane Monteith Hudson of Des Moines, Iowa, Richard Grant Hudson III (wife Kathy Hudson) of Kalamazoo, Michigan and Thomas Peter Hudson (wife Barb Gillespie) of Kalamazoo, Michigan, as well as his grandson ,Robert Grant Hudson (“Bo”) of Chicago, Illinois, (fiancée Eloise Germic), and sister, Pamela Krewson of Scottsdale AZ. He was very active in the community and had many close friends.

Dick was brought up in South Bend, Indiana and graduated at age 16 from John Adams High School to join the Army Specialized Training Reserve Program at the University of Kentucky.  When he reached age 18, he was activated in the Army and later commissioned into the Signal Core in 1946 and served in the Philippines at Leyte and Manilla until 1947.  He reached the status of second lieutenant. He continued his college education at Denison University and graduated in 1950. 

Richard was a personnel recruiter from 1950 until he retired 50 years later in Kalamazoo.  He started his career in Toledo, Ohio and Cleveland, Ohio.  He owned offices in Dearborn MI, Toledo OH, Detroit MI, and Kalamazoo MI.

Dick’s vocation led him into public service as a Bedford Township Trustee in Monroe County, MI, a Monroe County Commissioner, and a specialization in industrial development.  He and his wife Lois worked in the personnel consultation until they retired in the year 2000. When they retired, they traveled winters in their motorhome.

Both Dick and Lois were active in the communities where they lived. In 1979, they settled in Richland, Michigan and are charter members of the Gull Lake United Methodist Church.  Later, Dick joined the First Congregational Church of Kalamazoo.

Funeral services with full military honors will be held 2:30 p.m., Friday, October 13, 2023 at the Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta.  In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to Centrica Care Navigators 7100 Stadium Dr. Kalamazoo, MI 49009 (https://centricacare.org/).  Arrangements by Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Richland Chapel.
