In Loving Memory of Shirley A. Townsend August 21, 1936 – July 8, 2025 Battle Creek, Michigan
Shirley A. Townsend, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2025, at the age of 88. Born and raised in Battle Creek, Michigan, Shirley was the daughter of Harold and Ruth (Martin) Swanson, founders of Archway Cookies—a legacy of strength and adventurous spirit.
Shirley is lovingly remembered by her five children: Debrah (Ric, deceased) Riegel, Mark (Lynn) Townsend, Pamela (Steve) Stewart, Susan (Ray) Sawyer, and Barbara (Craig) Hoekstra. Her joy multiplied with the arrival of her grandchildren—Amanda (Stephan May), Ben (Samantha), and Jordan (Eileen) Stewart; Jacob (Alexandria) and Sarah Hoekstra; Sophie (Andrew Wetherington) and Macy Townsend; Lexie and Garrett Sawyer; and Heather Uhrie and Derric (Jill) Riegel—as well as eight great-grandchildren. Shirley was preceded in death by her brother, Merle Swanson, sister, Dora Birmingham and sister, Jacquelyn Nouveau.
A member of Southside Bible Church, Shirley served her community as a 4H leader for over a decade, notably with the Amigo Riders 4H Club. Horses were her lifelong passion—from her formative years spent learning and riding at Orme Ranch in Arizona to raising Peruvian Paso horses and competing in endurance rides later in life. She once rode horseback across the entire state of Michigan and into Canada—an extraordinary testament to her strength and adventurous heart.
Beyond the saddle, Shirley was a talented knitter and crafter who took joy in making things for loved ones. She enjoyed golfing, bowling and explored the world as a seasoned traveler.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and no public services are planned. Memorial contributions may be made to Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center, honoring the vibrant legacy Shirley leaves behind.
