Steven Ira Carter

October 2, 1957 — May 7, 2023

Bellevue

Steven Ira Carter, 65, passed away unexpectedly at home on Sunday, May 7, 2023.

Steve was born Oct. 2, 1957 in Battle Creek to Bob and Frances (Nelson) Carter. He grew up between Michigan and Illinois, graduating in 1975 from West Aurora High School.

Steve married Kathy Isenogle in 1976, and though they would divorce, he raised their daughter of whom he was incredibly proud.

He later earned his bachelor’s degree from Siena Heights University and, for a career, served the City of Battle Creek for several years in the Income Tax Department.

Steve was known in the area for playing billiards and running local pool leagues. He also liked to golf, go on casino trips and take vacations with friends. His recent hobbies include riding a new motorcycle, tending to his rose bushes, and caring for his animals, especially his beloved dog, Deogee.

He was a student for life, always reading, questioning, and taking in as much knowledge as possible. He loved history and trivia, tuning into Jeopardy every evening. He also enjoyed a healthy debate about political and social issues and could be quite persistent and obstinate in his opinions.

Steve is survived by his daughter, Dana (Scott) Jacob, and two granddaughters, Payton and Camryn; brother, Greg (Gloria) Carter; and several nephews and nieces, including Lori (Josh) Ferguson and Kiley (Rob) Roush, who were close; and cousin, Bobbi (Bud) Forsythe. He also will be deeply missed by his partner Britton Browne, with whom he shared a home and life for the past 14 years.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Janet, Ken, Keith and Kevin; and nephews, Mason and Westin.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 13 at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home, with funeral services to immediately follow at 10:00 a.m. The service will be livestreamed at https://vimeo.com/event/3385052.  A private burial will take place.
