Susan Surakomol

Susan Surakomol, 77, of Bloomfield, died Friday, March 24, 2017 at Select Specialty Hospital B.C. She was born September 14, 1939 in Thailand the daughter of Than and Boonnitt (Piyawoodh) Kakanpolas. Suliporn was the eldest of four in Thailand and grew up near the ocean. She earned a liberal arts degree before being named a Fulbright Scholar to complete a graduate degree in literature in the US. She married Komol, a gastroenterologist and together they permanently moved to Michigan. As a mother, she also managed Komol's medical practice office.

She earned a Bachelor's degree from Chulalonkorn University and a Graduate's degree from The University of Kansas.
They raised three children who all went on to earn college and graduate degrees of their own. She and Komol instilled a love of learning and travel in all of them.

She adopted the name Susan which people had affectionately called her for years. Most of all, she loved travel. Komol and Susan took trips internationally almost every year. Some of the family's most memorable vacations were in Europe and Asia.

She adored her grandchildren and the wonderful weeks in the summer where the family made happy memories at their home on Lake Huron. Susan loved looking out across the ocean from her glider chair laughing with the children.

Susan practiced Buddhism and was very active with the Great Lakes Buddhist Vihara temple in Southfield MI and the Midwest Buddhist Meditation Center in Warren MI. She loved participating in meditation retreats where she made many lifelong friends.

She is survived by her Husband: Komol Surakomol MD; daughters: Koset Surakomol, Sirasa Schonder, Amara PriorSons in Law: John Schonder MD, Don Prior; sister: Umaporn Jilek; brothers: Chatpol Kakanopas, Sornsak Kakanopas and grandchildren: Sara, Teresa, and Philip Schonder

A funeral service will be held at 4:00 pm, Sunday, March 26, 2017 at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, 105 Capital Ave. N.E., Battle Creek
