Valentine Julia "Val" Tower,of Battle Creek, passed away on January 3, 2014, at her home, after a short illness. She was born on February 12, 1925 in Rothbury, Michigan to the late John and Mary Mezyk. Val graduated in 1942 and married her husband, Harold Arthur Tower, in June, 1944. She worked secretarial positions in finance and accounting.
Val retired from Comerica Bank in 1985 as Vice President of Finance. She was an active parishioner in St. Joseph's Catholic Church. In their sixty-nine years of marriage, Val and Harold traveled, often on their motorcycles, throughout the United States, visiting all fifty states. They also took many trips to Australia to visit their youngest son, John, and his family. Val was preceded in death by her older brother, Ed Mezyk, and her sister, Helen Fischer. She is survived by her husband, Harold, along with her sons William (Patricia) of Portage, Michigan and John (Lisa) of Melbourne, Australia; her grandchildren Emily Tower of Chicago, Illinois, Laura Tower of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Bryant Tower of Pacific Beach, California, Helen Trood-Tower and Elizabeth Trood-Tower, both of Melbourne, Australia: and a great granddaughter, Stella.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Very Reverend Fr. Mark J. Vyverman V.F., at St. Joseph Catholic Church 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2014. Interment will follow at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Friends will be received on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Battle Creek, where the Parish Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Memorial contributions, in Val's name, may be made to the Women's Guild of St. Joseph Catholic Church, 61 N. 23rd St., Battle Creek, MI 49015.
