Vaughna L. Layton, 93, of Battle Creek, died April 10, 2025, at NorthPointe Woods, Pineview Assisted Living.
Vaughna was born November 12, 1931, in Holly, MI to Sheral D. and Onolea B. (Clapp) Adams. She graduated from Howell High School and one-week later, married John (Jack) Layton in June of 1949. They raised their children in Howell. Vaughna worked at several family-owned businesses, Riverside Christmas Tree Farm, Jacks Custom Shop and Custom Fun Machines. She also sold cars, worked in a music store and sold real estate.
Vaughna was a founding member of the Vintage American Race Car Club and still attended meetings later in life. She enjoyed auto racing, watching the Detroit Tigers, knitting and playing scrabble. Vaughna and Jack loved traveling in their motor home and visited 48 states. Moving to Battle Creek in 2013 to be near family, Vaughna attended South Side Bible Church.
Vaughna is survived by her children, J. William (Shirley) Layton, Michael Layton, Sheryl (Hilda) Charles, Joseph (Amy) Layton and her grandchildren, J. Brian (Janel) Layton, Jesse Layton, Curtis (Jennifer) Layton, Andrew (Elise) Layton, Daniel (Tara) Layton; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Stanley (June) Adams and several cousins, nieces, nephews and their families.
Vaughna was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, Jack; her sister, Jacquline Thomas and a brother, Floyd Trafford Jr.
A memorial service to celebrate Vaughna’s life will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at South Side Bible Church, 4515 Beckley Rd, Battle Creek, MI 49015. A private interment will be at a later date at Sanford Cemetery in Cohoctah Township.
