Vivian Starr (Rice) Blanchette, 75, a lifelong Battle Creek resident, died with her family at her side at Heartland Health Care Center on Wednesday, October 16, 2013.
She was born in Battle Creek, MI on December 19, 1937, to Emmon C. and Norma June (Allen) Rice. Vivian was a 1956 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School and attended Kellogg Community College. She was employed as a freight payment clerk at the Kellogg Company for 11 years, and Denso Manufacturing for five years. She was also employed over the years with the Interbake Company, Battle Creek Equipment Company and the former Battle Creek Township.
Surviving are her children, Christine (Jeff) Leiter of Battle Creek, Steven G. Matthews of Battle Creek, and John E. Matthews of Ithaca, MI; two grandchildren, Katie (Alfred) Mathes and Jason (Stephanie) Leiter; three great-grandchildren, Kaden, Gavin and Camrynn; two brothers, Edward E. (Kathy) Rice of Traverse City and David N. (Beth) Hoppe of Battle Creek; and her sister, Joyce (Clair) Lockwood of Homosassa, Florida. Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, her step-father, Norbert Hoppe and a brother, Frederick C. Rice.
Vivian loved her family and close friends deeply, and those who took care of her over the years while a resident at Heartland Health Care Center. She enjoyed crocheting and helping others in need. Animals were a passion of hers. She had many cats over the years and was proud to be a member of the World Wildlife Fund.
Services for her family and close friends will be held in the Chapel at Memorial Park Cemetery in Battle Creek 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 21, 2013.
