Walter Clifford "Walt" Hemry, 90, of Battle Creek died at Lakeview Senior Living on Saturday, June 13, 2015.
Walt was born November 11, 1924 in Steuben County, Indiana to Miles K. and Wava L. (Porter) Hemry. He grew up in Michigan and was a 1942 graduate of Kellogg Agricultural School. Walt served on the USS Kwajalein CVE-98 and the USS Bismarck CVE-95 with the U.S. Navy during WWII; and again with the Navy in Korea. He earned a Business Degree from the former Argubright Business College. Walt retired as a Material Supervisor in Purchasing from Post Division of Kraft General Foods in 1981, after 36 years.
Walt was united in marriage to the former, B. Elizabeth Sackitt on September 17, 1946. Sadly "Liz" preceded him in death on December 2, 1960. Walt married Betty L. Babcock on June 17, 1961. He was also preceded in death by Betty on September 30, 2004. Surviving are five daughters, Kay (David) Mitchell and Cindy Schweitzer all of Battle Creek, Nancy (Tom) Chandler of Allegan, Karn (Bill) Cunningham of Rotonda West, FL and Sherry Hemry of Englewood, FL; grandchildren, Tony (Wendi) Mitchell, Brian (Stephanie) Mitchell, Amy (Eamon) McCleery, Andrew (Stacy) Schweitzer, Ryan (Andrea) Chandler, Tara (Mark) Collins and Lucy Cunningham; 13 great-grandchildren; a step-sister, Dena Carnell of Battle Creek; half-sister, Joyce McKee of Pleasant Lake, IN; many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friend, Rita Bendfelt. In addition to his wives, Walt was preceded in death by a half- brother, Jack Frever; step-brother, James Hemry; and a son-in-law, J. Chris Schweitzer.
Walt was a member of American Legion Post #54. He was an avid Detroit Tiger fan and he enjoyed sports, woodworking, fishing and golfing. Walt loved spending time with his family and attending their sporting and personal activities. He will be remembered as a meticulous, loving man; who used his carpentry skills to make furniture and woodworking projects for family and friends.
Friends will be received 12:00 â 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 6, 2015 at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, where memorial services will be officiated by Rev. Robert G. Muirhead 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 6, 2015. Military honors and inurnment will follow at Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
