Wayne Robert Shoup, age 96, of Battle Creek died Friday afternoon, September 5, 2014. He was born in Battle Creek on September 9, 1917, the loving son of Leonard and Helen (Fry) Shoup and graduated from Gull Lake Schools. Wayne co-owned and operated Shoup's Marathon with his son, Mike for more than 20 years. After retiring from his business, Wayne spent several years working for Ewing Trailer Sales and Struble's Hardware.
Wayne married the "Love of His Life", Belva E. Dowler in Kalamazoo, Michigan on June 25, 1944; she sadly preceded him in death on August 30, 2010. He is survived by his son, Mike (Sharon) Shoup of Dowling; his two daughters, Carol O'Connell of Battle Creek, and Kathy (John) Griffioen of Portage; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Wayne was also preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Harold Shoup.
Wayne was a member of the First Congregational Church, Battle Creek and Battle Creek Lodge #12 F.&A.M. Wayne was an avid sports fan and was a huge lifelong Detroit Tigers fan. He enjoyed traveling, camping, and spending time with family.
A memorial service to celebrate Wayne's life will be held 3:00 p.m., Monday, September 15, 2014 in the Miller Chapel at the First Congregational Church with Rev. Thomas J. Ott, officiating.
